The creative challenges developed for this site should fit within the following framework:
- 2nd grade comprehension level (U.S.A.)
- Easy to understand
- Uses limited materials
- Accessible by cell phone
A description of each of these attributes provided below.
2nd Grade Comprehension Level
The students we are targeting in Haiti will be 1st to 6th graders. Keep that in mind when you think of the technical level, theme, and engagement on the challenges you create.
Easy to Understand
Keep the language very simple in all of these challenges, both for the teachers and for the students. Avoid textbook jargon and focus on words that can be read aloud to a classroom.
Use Limited Materials
All of the materials used in a challenge need to be readily accessible in Haiti and either free or very inexpensive for the school to provide. All of the items on this list are available in the typical Haitian classroom:
- Writing utensils
- Notebook paper
- Ribbons (hair)
- Rubber bands
- Beads (hair)
Accessible by Cell Phone
Most Haitian schools don’t have computers and printers available, so all of our content must look awesome and work great on a cell phone.
The typical use case is a teacher reading the challenge from their cell phone, so we are going to avoid the use of video, images, and audio clips.
We recommended keeping the content as short as possible.
Cell phone plans and coverage are different in the US and Haiti, so the focus has to be on simple design and reliable delivery.
